Catraca Livre

Catraca Livre (“Open Turnstile” in Portuguese) is an information hub that selects and delivers information on free and low-cost opportunities in the city via a multi-channel media network that includes radio stations, newspapers, Internet, and bus and subway display screens. Volunteers from across São Paulo provide news about relevant people, places or events of interest to a central team of journalists who then filter this information for publication. Learning Neighborhood

Created by Cidade Escola Aprendiz, Learning Neighborhood is an innovative education initiative which turns the whole community into a classroom. It maps the assets of the neighborhood in order to create an accessible and user-friendly neighborhood for all residents. In a formal partnership, Google has given technological support to enhance the asset-mapping project. Since its initial establishment in São Paulo in 1997, Learning Neighborhood have been set up in more than 500 cities and 25,000 schools across Brazil. Read more.

Children’s Radio Foundation in South Africa

The Children’s Radio Foundation  gives young people a voice, connecting and empowering them to contribute to individual and social change. Through the use of radio and other existing low-cost technologies, the CRF creates innovative media content made by and for children. And through equipping them with the necessary skills and tools, the CRF allows young leaders to make their voices heard. In partnership with Open City, the Radio Foundation will train teachers and students on mapping and communicating the assets of the community, city, and country. Read more.

Wikimapa

Wikimapa is an online collaborative (wiki-based) map focused on mapping interest spots within low-income communities and slums in Rio de Janeiro. Rede Jovem Program has developed three tools to enable active participation and facilitate users’ acess to all mapped information: Wikimapa’s website, mobile site, and mobile application. Read More.

Campus Aberto is the first Brazilian website for carpooling and sharing information regarding safe and secure taxi and bicycle routes. It also diffuses information about cultural and educational opportunities of the city.
